I have changed the title of my newsletter. Why? Because I’ve reinvented E. L. Smith Consulting and added advocacy to my skills and services. Actually, advocacy is the overarching theme…

I will focus on each area for one quarter with the first being Patient Advocacy. The second quarter will be Women in the Workforce as Self-advocates, third quarter Leaders as Advocates.

My book, “The Patient Advocacy Handbook: Empowering you to Boldly Navigate the Healthcare System” will be out in January 2022.  I’ll let you know the minute that it is available to order. My intention is to do a book signing in North Carolina as well as here in Pensacola. Stay tuned.

If you’ve entered the world of taking care of a terminally-ill friend or family member, The Patient Advocacy Handbook: Empowering You to Boldly Navigate the Healthcare System is for you. Authored by  Betsy Smith, PhD out of her personal experience, find out how and why she walked into the hospital CEO’s office, and how you too can do whatever is necessary in advocating for your patient.

The story begins by describing Betsy’s four-year journey of walking alongside her husband Jack during his last years, combining her story with interviews from other caregivers and advocates. She uses the narratives to parse out actionable advice on a myriad of levels, all with the intention of supporting you with the foundation needed to confidently advocate for your patient – directly to the CEO, if necessary.

Not to be confused with the same concept, you’ll learn the definitions of advocacy and caregiving, what each entails, and where each starts and stops. Further than that, when you need additional assistance from professionals, you’ll know whom to contact at all stages of the process. 

Fully believing each person has the capacity for boldness, Betsy openly talks with numerous participants about their struggles and challenges with the healthcare system. She then uses this to teach readers – those entering, or in the middle of, an advocate or caregiving role – how to overcome them. The strategies found inside the handbook will take you from where you are on your journey, with thoughts on how to transition back to your life at the close of your advocacy role.
