- What kind of experience is required?
- What is the time commitment?
- When does the board get work done?
- When are the meetings?
- How long is the term of service?
- What kind of training is provided?
- What do you have to offer?
- Why does the board want you? What does the board want out of you?
- Does the staff serve at the pleasure of the board? Or does the board serve at the pleasure of the staff.
Volunteermatch.com has a website that is helpful in making decisions and identifying boards.
Do your research about the organization in which you are interested. Identify the staff person with who you can speak. When you call and express interest in their organization, you will get an appointment. You want to know if there are board openings available. Think about volunteering at the organization before serving on the board. You’ll get a lot of insight by volunteering on a project.
I’ve served on local, national and international boards. Serving on a board is fulfilling and rewarding. Service does take time, be sure you have the time.
