Now that the Patient Advocacy Handbook is published, I’m ready to implement new programs beginning in July 2022.
The next three newsletters will be about Leaders as Advocates for their teams. I spoke to the Pensacola Chapter of the Society for Human Resources recently about the following:
Transforming Corporate Culture – Reimagining Workforce Mental Health
Some Current Statistics
- Major depressive disorders have increased from $31 billion to $51 Billion
- One employee with depression costs $10,000 for health insurance vs $4,584
- Depressed employees are absent 27 days/year
- $1.00 in prevention/intervention saves $2.00-$4.00
- Recruitment and rehiring costs $4,000 per employee
What can a company do to lose the stigma of mental health?

- Leaders must be role models. The CEO sets the culture of the organization
- Encourage, promote and facilitate discussions about mental health
- Make coaches available to employees
- Initiate a Wellness Program
- Provide classes, workshops, and lunch and learn programs

Is there a difference between a mentor, coach, sponsor, and advocate?
Maybe.
Coach – listens carefully and provides guidance in helping you derive meaning from what is happening around you. In a coaching engagement, the client and coach are partners in the experience. According to Catalyst, “you and your coach both drive the relationship – you can reach out to your coach when you need help and your coach can also reach out to you.”
Mentor – listens, provides insight, and shares formal and informal advice. Mentors discuss how you might consider your next career move, ask for a raise, or position yourself for a new assignment or promotion.
Sponsor – a highly regarded influencer operating in circles that exceed your own. They endorse and facilitate your advancement.
Advocate – like a sponsor, an advocate helps someone achieve their goals and concerns and carries them up the corporate ladder. They share performance results and positive feedback with other departments. They seek out growth opportunities for top performers.
What role do you play? What role do you want to play?
