Leadership is not for the faint of heart.
In the 1970’s Paul Hersey and Ken Blanchard Developed the Situational Leadership Model. Over the next three months, I will explain this model and give examples for its application.
The Betsy Smith Theory of Situational Leadership is – “all effective leadership is situational” depending on, yes you guessed it, the situation.
Let’s review four leadership styles.
1 Charismatic – Strength of Personality
The Charismatic Leader depends on the strength of personality to lead. Do you know a leader with this style? When is the Charismatic style most effective?
2 Dictatorial – Top down, My way or the highway
A dictatorial leader is directive, to put it mildly. The Dictatorial Leader makes the decisions and gives the orders. Can you think of situations when this leadership style is best?
3 Transactional – Details, Manages Bureaucracy Not People
Have you worked for a Transactional Leader? Is this you preferred Leadership Style? The Transactional Leader takes care of all of the details and manages the bureaucracy. This leader is not “people oriented.”
4 Transformational – Vision and foresight to transform people and institutions
As you might guess, the Transformational Leader has a clear vision and great foresight. This person wants to transform people and institutions for greater success. Have you worked for a Transformational Leader?
